Dental Implants in St Andrews: What the Process Involves and Why St Andrews Dental Care Is the Right Place to Start

Dental implants are the most permanent and natural-feeling solution available for replacing a missing tooth, and for patients who are suitable they are almost always the first recommendation. But the process is more involved than most people expect when they first start researching, and the quality of the result depends enormously on the experience and approach of the team delivering it.

St Andrews Dental Care is based on Lockhart Place in the heart of St Andrews and is part of the Pain Free Dentistry Group. With a 4.9-star rating across 231 Google reviews, 2024 and 2025 Dentistry Awards recognition, and a team whose implant expertise spans decades of postgraduate training and real patient results, the practice has established itself as one of the most trusted providers of implant treatment in Fife.

Why Choose St Andrews Dental Care for Dental Implants in St Andrews?

Choosing the right provider for implant treatment is one of the most significant dental decisions you will make. At St Andrews Dental Care, the depth of implant experience available is exceptional.

Implant treatment is led by Stuart Farmer (GDC 54291), who graduated from Dundee Dental School in 1980 and has spent the past decade focusing specifically on the placement and restoration of implants. He holds the DGDP from the Royal College of Surgeons London and Membership in General Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and continues to attend postgraduate courses worldwide. He is supported by Chris McCrudden (GDC 76410), who holds a Master’s Certificate in Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry from the Rosenthal Institute New York, has completed training in dental implantology at the Cambridge Academy of Implantology, trained with the Malo Clinic in Portugal on the AO4 concept, and is a member of the International Team for Implantology.

Jenna Scoular, the practice manager, spent years as a dedicated implant nurse before moving into her management role and was a 2025 Dentistry Awards finalist for Best Dental Nurse. Dental nurse Elle Robertson works specifically alongside the implant team and describes helping implant patients regain their confidence as one of the most rewarding parts of her role.

The practice uses laser-assisted implant techniques and backs every implant with a lifetime warranty. Pain-free treatment is a written guarantee: if you feel pain during any private procedure, your treatment visit is free.

Patients who have completed implant treatment at St Andrews Dental Care describe their experiences in detail. One patient who had a damaged front tooth post removed, a synthetic bone graft, and a titanium implant placed wrote: “Five months to heal then hooray. Two lovely new front teeth. Great treatment.” Another patient who had received conflicting advice from other providers for years wrote: “I have had a missing tooth for years, with little progress or clear path forward.

I am so happy to say that I have just had a successful dental implant surgery. A special shout out to Claire and Stuart for all their help throughout the process.” George Houston, who came to the practice after years on the NHS and required bone grafting before implant placement, wrote: “I am left with a new front tooth which perfectly matches my natural teeth. I have no hesitation in recommending Stuart and this practice.”

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed surgically into the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Over several months, the bone grows around and fuses with the post in a process called osseointegration. Once that bond is confirmed, a custom-made crown is attached on top.

The result is a replacement tooth anchored directly into the jaw. It does not move, does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, and requires no special maintenance beyond normal brushing and flossing. Most patients describe the finished result as completely indistinguishable from their natural teeth.

Why Implants Are the Gold Standard for Missing Teeth

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone at that site begins to lose density. A natural root transmits biting forces into the bone every time you eat, and without that stimulation the bone slowly resorbs. Over time this affects the shape of the jaw, the stability of neighbouring teeth, and in cases of multiple missing teeth, the appearance of the face.

Dentures and bridges replace the visible tooth but do nothing to prevent this bone loss. An implant is the only tooth replacement that replicates the function of a root, stimulating the bone and maintaining the structure that would otherwise be lost.

Beyond bone preservation, implants offer a level of stability and natural function that other restorations cannot match. With proper care, they are designed to last a lifetime.

Who Is Suitable for Dental Implants in St Andrews?

Most healthy adults who are missing one or more teeth are potentially suitable for implants. The key requirements are sufficient bone volume at the implant site, healthy gums, and good general health to support healing after a minor surgical procedure.

Patients who have had a missing tooth for some time may have experienced bone loss at the site. In many cases this can be addressed with bone grafting before or at the time of implant placement. Stuart Farmer and Chris McCrudden both have experience with complex cases requiring preparatory bone work, and the practice regularly treats patients who have been told elsewhere that their case is difficult.

Active gum disease needs to be treated and stable before an implant is placed. Uncontrolled gum disease is one of the main causes of implant failure, so this is always addressed first. Dental therapists Lynsay Stewart and Hannah Riddoch support patients in achieving and maintaining the gum health that underpins long-term implant success.

Smoking increases implant failure rates and your dentist will discuss this honestly with you at your consultation. Medical conditions that affect healing require individual assessment.

The only reliable way to know whether implants are right for your situation is a thorough clinical assessment. At St Andrews Dental Care, that process begins with a complimentary consultation with treatment coordinator Haley Bendall or Caitlin Heath, who will walk you through your options with no commitment and no pressure.

The Dental Implant Process at St Andrews Dental Care

Your Complimentary Consultation

Your first step is a complimentary consultation with the treatment coordination team at St Andrews Dental Care. Haley Bendall and Caitlin Heath are both experienced in guiding patients through the implant process clearly and without pressure. Patients consistently describe the consultation as warm, unhurried, and genuinely informative. One patient described being guided through options over a coffee with Haley, noting that throughout the treatment she was kept in close contact and checked in on after appointments.

Clinical Assessment and Planning

Your dentist will carry out a full examination including digital X-rays and 3D imaging to assess bone volume and anatomy at the implant site. A detailed treatment plan is built from this assessment covering every stage, the full timeline, and a complete written breakdown of costs before anything moves forward. Written quotations are provided as standard.

Any Preparatory Treatment

If the tooth is still present it is extracted first. If bone grafting is needed it takes place at this stage and is given time to heal before implant placement. Both Stuart Farmer and Chris McCrudden have experience treating cases with significant bone loss. One patient described the process as longer than expected due to the need to rebuild bone, but noted that at all times the care and attention was excellent and the final result matched their natural teeth.

Laser-Assisted Implant Placement

St Andrews Dental Care uses laser-assisted implant techniques for a more precise and minimally invasive placement. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic using the practice’s five-step pain-free protocol: numbing gel applied first, warmed anaesthetic, the shortest and finest needles, a slow injection rate, and a computer-assisted delivery system. The practice’s comfort menu is available throughout, including headphones, a stress ball, a blanket, an eye mask, and lip balm. One patient described these touches as making a significant difference: “Little touches like headphones, a stress ball, and a blanket helped me feel far more comfortable and relaxed during treatment.”

Healing and Osseointegration

The implant is left to fuse with the bone over three to six months. Check-up appointments monitor progress during this period but there is no active treatment. A temporary restoration keeps the gap closed while healing takes place.

Your Crown

Once osseointegration is confirmed, a digital scan or impressions are taken to fabricate your custom crown. The crown is matched to the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. When it is fitted, the implant is complete and fully functional.

Laser-Assisted Implants With a Lifetime Warranty

St Andrews Dental Care offers laser-assisted dental implants backed by a lifetime warranty, reflecting the team’s confidence in both the precision of their technique and the standard of the results they achieve for patients. The money-back guarantee on implant treatment means that if you are not able to eat the foods you love again after treatment, your money is refunded. One patient who arrived genuinely sceptical about whether an implant could be pain-free wrote simply: “It was true. Stuart and the team treated me with the utmost care and attention throughout the process.”

Full Mouth Dental Implants in St Andrews

For patients who are missing multiple teeth or who require a full arch restoration, St Andrews Dental Care offers comprehensive full mouth implant solutions including implant-supported dentures and same-day teeth on implants.

One patient who had extensive treatment including two implants with bone graft alongside other restorative work wrote that the entire experience exceeded her expectations and that Chris was outstanding throughout, bringing a calm and caring approach to what could otherwise feel very daunting.

A full assessment and treatment plan will give you a clear picture of what is involved and what the cost looks like before any decisions are made.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

With proper care, the implant post is designed to last a lifetime. The crown may need replacing after 15 to 20 years depending on wear, but the implant itself rarely requires intervention once it has successfully integrated.

Good oral hygiene and regular check-ups are the main requirements for long-term success. Dental therapists Lynsay Stewart and Hannah Riddoch support patients in maintaining the gum health and oral hygiene that keep both implants and natural teeth in excellent condition over the long term.

Dental Implant Costs and Finance Options in St Andrews

The cost of a dental implant depends on how many are being placed, whether preparatory work is needed, and the type of crown used. A complete written breakdown of costs is provided before any commitment is made. This is one of the practice’s five written promises to every patient.

Finance options are available to help spread the investment and are discussed at your complimentary consultation so you have a clear picture of your monthly commitment before agreeing to anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who carries out dental implants at St Andrews Dental Care?

Implant treatment is led by Stuart Farmer (GDC 54291), who graduated from Dundee Dental School in 1980, holds postgraduate qualifications from both the Royal College of Surgeons London and Edinburgh, and has been focusing on implant placement and restoration for over a decade. He is supported by Chris McCrudden (GDC 76410), who has completed implantology training at the Cambridge Academy of Implantology and trained with the Malo Clinic in Portugal, and is a member of the International Team for Implantology. Practice manager Jenna Scoular has a background as a dedicated implant nurse and dental nurse Elle Robertson works specifically alongside the implant team.

Are dental implants painful at St Andrews Dental Care?

St Andrews Dental Care guarantees pain-free treatment backed by a money-back promise. Implant placement uses a five-step pain-free protocol and laser-assisted techniques. As one patient who had been sceptical about the promise wrote: “It was true. Stuart and the team treated me with the utmost care and attention throughout the process.”

How long does the dental implant process take in St Andrews?

From consultation to fitted crown, most single-tooth cases take between six and twelve months. The majority of that time is the osseointegration phase rather than active appointments. Cases requiring bone grafting take a little longer but the final result is the same.

Can I get a dental implant if I have had a missing tooth for several years or been told my case is difficult?

In most cases yes. Bone loss at the site may mean grafting is needed before placement, and both Stuart Farmer and Chris McCrudden have experience with complex cases. The practice regularly sees patients who have received conflicting advice elsewhere and have found a clear path forward here. Your dentist will assess the situation fully at your consultation and advise honestly on what is involved.

Does St Andrews Dental Care offer finance for dental implants?

Yes. Finance options are available to help spread the cost of implant treatment. These are discussed at your complimentary consultation so you know your full monthly commitment before agreeing to anything.

Are dental implants available on the NHS in St Andrews?

NHS provision for dental implants is very limited and typically restricted to specific clinical criteria. In most cases implants are provided privately. St Andrews Dental Care offers finance options to help make the investment manageable.

What happens if I do not replace a missing tooth?

Leaving a gap leads to gradual bone loss at the site, drifting of neighbouring teeth, and changes to your bite over time. These effects compound and make future treatment more complex. Replacing a missing tooth promptly is considerably simpler and more cost-effective than addressing the secondary problems that develop if the gap is left untreated.

Having had a lifelong fear of the dentist and previous awful experiences in the past at other surgeries I was recommended to St Andrews dental care by a friend who had her treatment here. I can’t find fault with the surgery from the initial consultation to my first surgery yesterday - I was found to need my two front teeth removed( one was a metal bridge which was fitted over a year ago which was aesthetically awful and the other one had cracked at the root which hadn’t been detected at the original accident) the service I received was outstanding- relaying my fears, a painless procedure and the pre and post procedure care so far has been excellent. Stuart and his team constantly ensured I was comfortable and happy for the full 2 hours my of my initial treatment period making me mushy less anxious about upcoming appointments.

I signed up with St Andrews Dental Care over a year ago. I was a very anxious, nervous patient who previously would lose sleep the night before a dental appointment. From my very first conversation with Christina, the receptionist, I was put at ease. Christina and Rebecca are warm and welcoming as soon as you enter the practice. Haley the treatment co-ordinator is attentive and understanding of nervous patients like myself as are the dental nurses. . Claire, the dentist is kind and understanding and has changed the way I feel about any dental treatment. I attended an appointment for an extraction with no fear or nerves and knew I’d receive the best of care. I’m now starting my maintance care plan and have no hesitation in recommending St Andrews Dental care.

I telephoned for an Emergency Apppointment as my own NHS dentist had no space today. I then contacted St Andrews Dental care and I was given an appointment an hour later. The dentist, Claire, was very reassuring and I was very satisfied with the treatment I received. The cost was reasonable considering I am not registered with this practice. Highly recommend to anyone else in a similar situation.

Our dentist Claire is brilliant. We always feel at ease and in really good hands with her. She has a lovely calm manner and explains every step as she goes. She recently did some composite bonding on my front teeth and it looks absolutely amazing. She’s also wonderful with my little daughter, who can sometimes feel a bit anxious, but Claire always reassures her by calmly talking her through everything.

I can’t recommend this dental practice highly enough. We had extensive work done here over the course of around 7 months, including two implants with bone graft and 20 porcelain veneers on the top and bottom. The entire experience exceeded my expectations from start to finish. The whole team have been incredibly supportive and accommodating throughout. My main specialist, Chris, is outstanding - not only in terms of skill, but also in the way he approaches his work. He brings a fun, caring atmosphere into what could otherwise be very stressful procedures, which made a massive difference for me. It’s very clear that this is more than just a job to him. He took the time to answer my million questions with calm confidence, never rushing or dismissing any concerns.Being able to message him directly with any questions gave me so much peace of mind, especially as I’m very nervous when it comes to dental treatment. Any time I had a concern, they were able to see me the same day, which I really appreciated.A special thank you to Elle, the dental assistant, who was so kind and attentive during procedures. She could see I was anxious and constantly checked in on me - her calm and gentle manner made a huge difference. Jenna was also amazing during my implant placement. The reception team were just as lovely and accommodating. Little touches like headphones, a stress ball, and a blanket helped me feel far more comfortable and relaxed during treatment.I won’t be going anywhere else for any future dental work and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this practice to anyone looking for exceptional care.

My experience at St Andrews Dental Care was beyond anything I could have hoped for. I have been struggling with TMJ jaw pain for 8 months and after my jaw got stuck yesterday, I decided to head to the clinic after Haley was able to book me in for an emergency appointment (absolute angel!). I got to see Dr. Stuart Farmer who immediately put me at ease and confirmed he could help me. After 8 long months of excruciating pain and no diagnosis from the local GP or NHS Dentist, Dr. Farmer was able to give me one in minutes, and take away the pain instantly. I can see now why they are called the "Pain Free" Dental Clinic. I was sent away with the proper meds and splint needed to correct my problem and have not been in any pain since. I couldn't recommend this clinic more. They will look after you 100% and do it with a level of compassion and professionalism I've had yet to see anywhere else in my 6 years of living in the U.K. Thanks Team :)

I went to St Andrews Dental Care after being with the NHS for many years but starting to feel increasingly let down and concerned about the care I was receiving. This culminated in a tooth getting broken and having to wear a partial denture which I hated. I consulted Stuart who spent a lot of time looking at the issues I had, and after getting some very good remedial general dental work, I started the process for an implant. The process was quite long as I needed to have my bone built back up, but at all times the care and attention was excellent.I am left with a new front tooth which perfectly matches my natural teeth.I have no hesitation in recommending Stuart and this practice. Indeed I have now signed up for regular care here.

St Andrews Dental Care has been an overall excellent and trusted clinic for my dental needs. I have had a missing tooth for years, with little progress or clear path forward, and I am so happy to say that I have just had a successful dental implant surgery. This means so much to me as I’ve been given conflicting advice for years about what is best for me. Until I came here and I have so much more clarity. The receptionists are so kind and helpful, there are payment plans to suit different budgets, and everything has been explained clearly every step of the way. A special shout out to Claire and Stuart for all of their help and support throughout the process of my implant.Would definitely recommend this dental clinic if you are looking for high quality dental implant or orthodontic care.

I can't describe how grateful I am for this practice. Everyone is wonderful, and they helped me--a person they didn't know, on holiday from the States, who suffered an emergency from a previous oral surgery.I'd emailed the affiliate office in Dundee, closer to where I was, but they didn't handle the level of care I needed but asked permission to forward my inquiry to St. Andrews. Within the hour, Christina from St. Andrews reached out to me.This is when I had an inkling of how incredible this office is.Christina said Stuart, the oral surgeon with the proper expertise in the area I needed, would be happy to see me, and could I provide some information from my U.S. surgeon (whom I had been trying to reach, to no avail). I sent her the information, and said I'd not yet received a reply. She could not find an email on the website, so she called--the U.S.I was miserable, barely able to eat, and the problems I was having were NOT typical for my past surgery, so I was terrified if I didn't get help, the implications would be worse, as every day I could discern my issues growing progressively worse. But Christina was able to squeeze me into Stuart's schedule as soon right after he returned from leave.Stuart's credentials were impeccable, and it showed in when it mattered most: It turned out Stuart did not have exactly the right instruments that would have made what he needed to do to "patch me up" until I could have the problem fixed permanently in the U.S. And this is THE most important part of this review and why I tell this longer story:Stuart, had to think on his feet and figure out what tools would work to get the job done correctly. You see, medicine is a science, but I have always heard good doctors/dentists say that it is also an art. Because Stuart is an expert at what he does, with years of experience, training--and training others, because he travels and keeps current with research and best practices, he was able to think fast about what could work. There was one moment when he thought he might have to send me to the lab in Dundee for just one last thing. But then he said maybe he had something in a bag at the end of the counter... and he tried it; his next words were, "it's a miracle."I replied, "you're a genius."He spent almost two hours fixing me up. When I tell you I had been in tears for 2-3 weeks, even wondering if it was fixable, I'm not exaggerating.I felt like hugging both him and Elle (his assistant for my appt--also wonderful, kind. Elle has amazing eyesight and can find the smallest things that drop on the floor! She spotted and sanitized what I couldn't even see!) Elle is a perfect assistant and made me feel cared for as well.I actually never asked the cost; probably no one could tell me since they wouldn't have known what needed done. But the cost was absolutely fair and reasonable. There was no padded charge they tried to make up and take advantage of the way some places might. I paid for a long and involved visit in a highly qualified office, where he saved my mouth, allowed me to eat, and gave me hope to enjoy the rest of my summer. I can't tell you how much that meant to me.Rebecca, yet another radiant and friendly person that gives a lovely image to this practice, checked me out. Christina had left for the day. When I emailed Christina to thank her for doing so much to help me, she admitted she checked with Rebecca later to see that I was taken care of, and that basically explains the heart of this office. While they're not NHS, if you can manage a private care office, choose this one. Most of all, you need medical professionals who think deeply and strategically when situations are not clear cut. I cannot recommend St. Andrews Dental Care highly enough.PS: I am leaving this review over a week after my appt, simply to note that Stuart's work really did do the job and I have been able to eat, and have no complications; my appt. to have the entire process redone is next month in the States, but thanks to Stuart, it's no longer an emergency.
